News and Events Calendar
Throughout November, the Rapid City Public Library is
celebrating 'Native American Heritage Month @ the Library.' This is the second year for the library to feature a month of programming and exhibits around a Native American theme, after an enthusiastic response in 2007. Join us for events and programs as well as the 'Living Traditions' art exhibit featuring Dakota, Nakota, and Lakota Art. This exhibit showcases artistic work from the Sioux culture created in the nomadic hunting period, and is sponsored by the Dakota Future Fund and the South Dakota Heritage Fund and displayed at both library locations. Another exhibit, provided by the Black Hills Pow Wow Association, is on display in the stairwell of the downtown library. |
Director's Column -- by Library Director Greta Chapman 1,223 Library Cards in September!
September was 'National Library Card Sign-Up Month,' a month we always look forward to. The objective each year is to keep improving on past results. This year, Mayor Alan Hanks challenged us to increase library card sign-ups and renewals by ten percent over September 2007. To meet that challenge, the library needed 825 people to get or renew their library card in September 2008. People responded! We exceeded that goal with 1,223 new or renewed cards in September -- nearly 400 more sign-ups than our goal!
A number of programs and contests were offered to generate interest and participation. A prize drawing was held for anyone who got or renewed a library card. Grand prize winner (photo 1) of an iBook computer, donated by Computer Village, was Lonna Romero, a student at Oglala Lakota College. The Mayor and I presented Lonna with her prize on October 3rd. Elizabeth Schubert won the other prize, a hockey stick autographed by the new Rapid City RUSH hockey team. The Mayor and RUSH General Manager Jason Rent presented Elizabeth with her prize at RUSH headquaters on October 29th (photo 2). Finally we congratulate the winner of the Name The Bookworm Contest. Katie Reisenauer, age 7, daughter of Natalie and Scott Reisenauer (photo 3) beat out 400+ other entries with her suggested name: In The Know JOE. She won a gift certificate to Borders book store. Chamber of Commerce President Linda Rabe and Chair of the Chamber's Cultural Affairs Committee Tammy Barrows joined me in making the presentation to Katie. Sculptor Tim Amos, who carved the bookworm, also participated. The bookworm carving was donated to the library by the Rapid City Area Chamber of Commerce. Each year, Library Card Sign-Up Month lets us know that we live in a community that supports and values the Rapid City Public Library. That's why we're determined to do our best to maximize what we offer the community in return. Thanks to all the citizens, patrons, business and community leaders who participated this year. |
